Project Overview

“ClosetWorld” is an all-ages graphic novel that whisks readers away on a thrilling adventure through portals of time and space. At the heart of the story is Little Johnny, a young boy who mistakenly receives the Reality Input Generator—a device capable of controlling all of reality. Unaware of its immense power, Johnny becomes the target of Heaven and Hell, who will stop at nothing to reclaim the device. As he journeys through fantastical realms, Johnny encounters whimsical characters and faces challenges that test his courage and imagination. Inspired by classics like C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, “ClosetWorld” offers a whimsical and fun-filled experience for readers young and old.

The Story Behind ClosetWorld

“ClosetWorld” is more than just a graphic novel; it’s a heartfelt tribute to family and the enduring power of storytelling. Matt Yocum, the writer of the comic book version, originally co-authored the prose version with his older brother, Richard. They embarked on a creative journey together, writing scenes in a tag-team fashion, each building upon the other’s ideas. This collaborative process was a source of joy and connection between them.

Tragically, on January 20, 2000, Richard chose to end his life, leaving behind two children. Devastated but determined, Matt committed himself to bringing their shared story to life as a graphic novel. “ClosetWorld” stands as a legacy piece, honoring Richard’s incredible imagination and providing a lasting tribute for his now-grown children and the grandchildren he never met. This project is a labor of love, years in the making, dedicated to the memory of a beloved brother.
